I needed a simple app that would teach my four year old opposites. My four year old attends pre-school and was recently sent home with a report card. The report was good, but pointed out some things that we as parents had forgotten to teach our young human. The first was opposites (she has sarcasm down pat).

So I opened up the iPad and searched for an opposites app. I ran across ZOOLA Opposites By Best kids Apps for 99 cents. I spent way too long on the decision and purchased the app. Ten minutes later my four year old can name several opposites. Did the app work? Yep.

How long did my four year old spend on the app? Probably 10 minutes a few times in a row. Is it a single use app? Yes it is. Does it do a good job at its single task? Yes it does.

100 Butterflies By Little Five Games is a very simple counting app. The graphics in 100 Butterflies By Little Five Games are very well done and well suited for a target audience of young girls learning to count. My four year old loved to click each butterfly and see each fly away as they came out of their cocoon.

What your child is going to learn is number by repetition and I think this is the perfect app for my four year old at this point. She can count to 13, but gets a little mixed up above that number. She has yet to realize that there is a system to the numbers and that is where this app can help. Repetition can drive that idea home.

The other game in the app asks your child to find the numbers in sequence. This gives the app another dimension where your child is quizzed while still learning the numbers. There isn’t a score or a reprimand, but only a suggestion to look for the correct number as it is spoken. Great job on that!

A great number learning app. Stands on its own teaching by repetition in a simple game.

My ten year old daughter has a friend who speaks Spanish, so my four year old is familiar with the idea that some people speak different languages. I was not as concerned with her learning the letters in Spanish as I was interested in this app working as a reinforcing app for her English ABCs.

It is a neat app and works well. It has some interesting choices for the objects that represent each letter, and that is a nice touch. The voice is very well done. I can also see my ten year old, or myself, using this app to actually learn the alphabet in Spanish.

Baby’s First Monsters: 123 By Three Brothers is a fun learning game, in this case numbers is what you will be learning. By visiting the various islands you can count the ears on the monsters, or the feet, or just the monsters themselves. Without realizing it your child is counting by twos and threes and so on. It is a fun app with great artwork that will keep your child engaged.

My four year old really likes the app, but isn’t quite ready to actually get the counting by multiples yet. That is ok she can still experience the app and learn through practice. It is fun to watch and achieve the various levels of the game. She still learns to count by singles and a great re-enforcer for when she starts preschool in a few days.

Your child is presented with a set of common farm animals; a sheep, chicken, donkey?, and many more. Clicking on a farm animal brings up a larger image of the animal where your child is told to click the square to find out more.

This is where the app gets fun. You can feed the donkey and play with the other animals in the app and they make animal noises, which is fun for kids. It really is a neat app once you get into it a bit. My daughter spent about 15 minutes on the app initially and has returned to play with it several more times since. Learning about animals, their names, the sounds they make is an important thing for a young child to learn and it is fun!

I was initially impressed by the graphics in the app. Very retro looking and fun for a child.

The interface was a tiny bit confusing at first, but after a few minutes with a parent my four year old was able to use the app on her own. It is just something to note–parents need to be involved with just about any app and all apps are better learning tools when a parent is helping.

Sorting the ducks is a great game, picking the colored shapes has a nice interface, and overall the game is very enjoyable for my four year old.

The interface is simple and clean–just what you want in an app like this. Your child selects an animal and hears the name of the animal. There are three different voices/languages to choose from. Two English and one is Czech I believe.

That is about it. Simple, fun, interesting, but ultimately a short lived app for a young child. Is it worthwhile? Sure.

It is a simple app where you child learns to recognize words by placing the letters into the right position. The word and letters are repeated along with a picture of the object the word represents. It is a nicely done app that has the potential to teach your child a lot of words.

The words get pretty hard. It lists up to level or grade 5, but really it is the type of word that gets difficult. The words become more abstract. This makes them harder to understand and grasp. The idea being that you learn to spell the word and recognize it by sight. Good idea, common practice.
