Toca Doctor by Toca Boca

  • July 27, 2011 7:55 am

Toca Doctor by Toca Boca lets your child be a doctor, well sorta :)

Have fun while killing germs, repairing bones, clearing up a red eye, and more. My four year old has played with this app for HOURS so far. In the past few days she has spent more time with this app than any other. Over and over again she fixes the bones, plugs the nose, applies bandages to the scrapes. She is really having fun.

Does it teach anything? Sure it does. Perhaps some responsibility and cleanliness. It also makes the breaks and scrapes seem less scary. It is a fun and engaging app.

Must have this app!

My lil’ Books- The Farm By Editions First-Gründ

  • July 25, 2011 7:48 am

My lil’ Books- The Farm By Editions First-Gründ is simple and fun app for young kids. Your child is presented with a set of common farm animals; a sheep, chicken, donkey?, and many more. Clicking on a farm animal brings up a larger image of the animal where your child is told to click the square to find out more.

This is where the app gets fun. You can feed the donkey and play with the other animals in the app and they make animal noises, which is fun for kids. It really is a neat app once you get into it a bit. My daughter spent about 15 minutes on the app initially and has returned to play with it several more times since. Learning about animals, their names, the sounds they make is an important thing for a young child to learn and it is fun!

Gingham Games By Classic Kid Productions

  • July 18, 2011 7:53 am

Gingham Games By Classic Kid Productions is a surprisingly fun app that can really teach something to your child. I was initially impressed by the graphics in the app. Very retro looking and fun for a child.

The interface was a tiny bit confusing at first, but after a few minutes with a parent my four year old was able to use the app on her own. It is just something to note–parents need to be involved with just about any app and all apps are better learning tools when a parent is helping.

Sorting the ducks is a great game, picking the colored shapes has a nice interface, and overall the game is very enjoyable for my four year old.

Transports by Editions First-Gründ

  • July 11, 2011 7:36 am

Transports by Editions First-Gründ is a simple game my daughter really enjoys. She is four and loves to color. This app lets her explore different “transports” and interact with the items by coloring, counting, and hearing the sounds they make. The interface is easy to navigate and your child can learn more about the item on the screen by clicking panel.

I was afraid that she was not going to get the hang of the panel in the upper left corner but she took to it quickly. This is the second app of this kind and it works well. A simple interface that keeps your child interested for a good period of time. Is your child going to learn numbers or letters from this app? Probably not, but the fun coloring and learning about the different transports is worthwhile.

PopOut! The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Loud Crow Interactive

  • July 4, 2011 7:51 am

PopOut! The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Loud Crow Interactive is another fantastic book from Loud Crow. They have a knack for taking a book and turning it into an interactive application without overdoing the technology. The graphics are outstanding and have a real book feel. The story is read very politely and clearly as well.

Can you really enjoy “reading” a book like this with your child? Yes. take the ipad on a trip, switch from a great book to a fun game at anytime. It is a great tool on a long trip or just before bed.

My four year old starts up this book by herself and I hear it reading to her while she is politely listening and sometimes not so politely pressing on the screen. The interactive parts of the book are the most intriguing part. If there is a section or page of the book that is not as interesting as the others then she can click away while still hearing the story.

Animal Words by Oh, Hello!

  • July 1, 2011 2:25 pm

Animal Words by Oh, Hello! Is a simple fun app for young children to learn about animal sounds. The interface is simple and clean–just what you want in an app like this. Your child selects an animal and hears the name of the animal. There are three different voices/languages to choose from. Two English and one is Czech I believe.

That is about it. Simple, fun, interesting, but ultimately a short lived app for a young child. Is it worthwhile? Sure.
